Record number of developments receive Skyrise Greenery Awards 2013

02 Nov 2013

2 November 2013 - The National Parks Board (NParks) will be recognising a record number of 14 local developments for excellence in implementing sky gardens and vertical greenery. This was the result of overwhelming response to NParks’ Skyrise Greenery Awards, which received 77 entries, the highest number since its inception in 2008, and almost three times the number received in its previous 2011 edition. The Awards format has been revamped as well. Instead of presenting awards to the top three developments, NParks introduced eight categories, including Outstanding, Excellence and Special Awards. The Awards will be presented at the opening of the GreenUrbanScape Asia, Singapore’s first regional landscape and urban greenery trade event, held from7 to 9 November 2013 at the Singapore EXPO.

Mr Poon Hong Yuen, Chief Executive Officer of NParks said, “The quality of entries received for the Skyrise Greenery Awards this year is outstanding. It is a testament of how building owners, developers and architects share our City in a Garden vision for pervasive greenery. The jury had to make tough decisions as there were so many impressive skyrise greenery innovations. Revamping the Awards to introduce eight categories allows us to recognise more developments from a wider range of sectors.”

PARKROYAL on Pickering, Singapore will receive the Outstanding Award for its unique “hotel in a garden” concept. The hotel stood out from other developments as skyrise greenery was integrated with its architecture, extending to rooms, corridors, lobbies and common washrooms, allowingguests to view and enjoy greenery from every room.

Hougang Primary School will receive three awards: Excellence Award, Special Award for DIY Project, and Special Award for Innovation. The judges were particularly impressed with the school’s self-created green wall that is cost effective, easily installed and maintained without professional help. The soil-less wall, made of just felt, acrylic board and staples, keeps away weeds and encourages plant growth. It also serves as a learning tool and helps lower the temperature of classrooms.
