Public Should Exercise Caution and Refrain from Visiting Parks and Nature Reserves During Stormy Weather

07 May 2012

Singapore, 7 May 2012 - Storms with intense rain and exceptionally strong winds over the weekend affected trees in Singapore.

In particular, 13 trees near to the tracks at Changi Beach Park were uprooted on 6 May.  Upon further inspection, we discovered about 100 fallen trees deeper in the wooded areas of the park. Our initial assessment is that exceptionally strong localised winds resulted in the fallen trees.  Heavy rains over the weekend had also saturated and softened the soil in the area. There were also some 10 trees affected by the strong winds in other parts of Singapore. No reports of injuries were received, and all trees causing obstruction have been moved away. In line with the usual practice after heavy storms, NParks officers are also conducting additional inspection of our trees.

The public is reminded not to visit parks and nature reserves during and just after a heavy storm.  For their own safety, the public should stay alert and keep themselves updated of the latest weather reports by tuning in to radio broadcasts. The latest weather reports, including heavy rain warnings are also available through NEA's weather forecast hotline at 6542 7788, the NEA website at www.nea.gov.sg, the mobile weather service (Weather@SG  - weather.nea.gov.sg) or Twitter via @NEAsg.

For feedback on fallen trees, the public can call NParks helpline at 1800-471-7300.
