Found in the mangrove swamps of Singapore, the Nipah Palm (Nypa fruticans) is a truly unique palm. The Nipah Palm is one of the few palm species with fossil records that can be traced back some 70 million years earlier! It is also utilised in many ways – for instance, the young, translucent seeds (known as ‘attap chee’) are boiled in sugar syrup, and used in desserts.
