Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form A tree that can reach 5 – 10 m tall.  
Foliage Leaves are large (up to 1 m long), peltate, oval shaped. Young leaves are reddish and rather large (60 – 100 cm diameter). 
Flowers Flowers are small and cluster to form inflorescence. Male inflorescence have lanceolate bracts subtending several small flowers. 
Fruit Fruit are capsules borne in densely together. Capsules (8 – 10 mm long) are glabrous, leathery and have 2 dehiscent valve where each valve is armed with 2 spine-like structure at the apex.
