Guidelines
Skyrise greenery is an up-and-coming sector of the landscape industry, with new materials, fresh ideas and techniques constantly emerging to cater to the increasing demand. Boundaries are explored and challenged, encouraging the surfacing of new supply chains and new job skills.
The objective of the Skyrise Greenery Guidelines is to set out the basic requirements in the construction of skyrise greenery – intended to act as a common reference point for quality assurance.
Some of the topics in progress, pertaining to Rooftop Greenery standards & guidelines, are:
- Design Loads
- Design for Safety on Rooftop Greenery
- Plants & Plant Selection
- Vegetation Support Layer
- Filter Layer
- Drainage Layer
- Protection against Root Penetration
- Water Proofing Layer
Beyond the infancy of this initial phase of Skyrise Greenery, new areas of concern / issues that surface will subsequently be brought to attention and addressed in the near future. When necessary, new standards & guidelines will be developed to cater to the growing industry demand.

Monsoon Advisory - Maintaining rooftops during strong winds and heavy rain
In Singapore, winds are exceptionally strong during the monsoon seasons of December to January and June to September, while rainfall tends to become heavier from November to January. These elements place additional pressure on all exposed building surfaces, including rooftop gardens. Building owners and facility managers should hence pay special attention to tall shrubs and trees present on your rooftop garden during this period to ensure safety of users. The following poster highlights some points to note for softscape maintenance. This resource should be used alongside the “Concise Guides to Safe Practices on Rooftop Greenery and Vertical Greenery” above, which highlights other areas of concern for both hardscapes and softscapes.
Bird-Safe Building Guidelines
The Bird-Safe Building Guidelines focuses on various ways of designing bird-safe building interiors and exteriors. The guidelines take reference from international standards and targets building managers, architects and developers to encourage them to incorporate biophilic design principles into developments. These guidelines are non-prescriptive best-practice recommendations and are meant to provide information on how our built environment can be more bird-friendly. You may find out more about the guidelines here.
Design Guides to Promote Biodiversity on Roof Gardens
Design Guides to Promote Biodiversity on Roof Gardens sets out to illustrate the basic evidence-based design-principles and the associated design-recommendations for the planning, design, construction and operation of rooftop greenery, with focus on these elevated vegetated surfaces for biodiversity enhancement. This design guide was developed together with an Ecology Survey Team and an Industry Technical Team. The Ecology Survey Team comprises of members from the National University of Singapore, Nature Society Singapore and National Parks Board. The Industry Technical Team comprises of members from the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Housing and Development Board, Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects and Nature Society Singapore.
