Description

Size 28 cm
Description Relatively long stout bill; long legs. Breeding: crown grey-brown with black streaks; upperparts grey-brown with black shaft-streak and barring and warm brown notching. Underparts have dark brown spots. Leg bright orange-red. Non-breeding: underparts white with some streaks. Leg orange-red.

Ecology, Habitat & Location

Habitats Mangroves
Distribution The East Asian-Australasian population breeds in Mongolia, Russian Far East and China, and winters in East Asia and Southeast Asia. Other populations breed from Iceland to Central Asia and winter in Africa, Middle East and South Asia. A very common winter visitor and passage migrant to Singapore and Sungei Buloh. It is one of the most common birds found in Sungei Buloh between Aug and Apr. First arrivals from the southward migration arrive as early as July.
