The endangered Horsfield’s Flying Squirrel (Iomys horsfieldii (Waterhouse, 1838)) is one of three species of flying squirrel recorded from Singapore. It can also be found in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and Java.
This flying squirrel has a round head with a blunt snout, and dark brown upperparts and orange-buff or whitish underparts. A nocturnal animal, it sleeps during the day and emerges from its tree hole to forage mainly on fruits during the night. It glides amongst trees, using its gliding membrane that stretches across its four limbs, and its flattened tail.
