Adder’s Tongue Fern

Fern

Notice a strange-looking growth from the Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) or Stag Horn Fern (Platycerium spp.)? It is more than likely that you have chanced upon the interesting looking Adder’s Tongue Fern, also known as the Ribbon Fern (Ophioglossum pendulum). An epiphytic fern with pendent, ribbon-like fronds that measure up to 1.5 m in length, this species can only be found growing from the ‘nests’ of these two ferns. It gets its name from the fertile fronds that resemble the tongue of the Adder, a type of snake.
