Blushing Bride
The Pineapple has an interesting looking relative in the Blushing Bride (Tillandsia ionantha). A small epiphyte which can grow up to 10 cm in height, the Blushing Bride has thick, silvery-green leaves which are arranged in a rosette. As its common name suggests, when the plant flowers, its innermost leaves nearest to the centre of the rosette turn bright red before its purple tubular flowers begin to emerge. Like most air plants, it is low maintenance and does not need any growing medium. It can be grown in various ways, such as being suspended in air or being mounted on driftwood or rocks. It is best grown under bright light, though this should not shine directly onto the plant, with regular misting.
