Despite its name, the Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena braunii) is in fact, not a bamboo at all. Rather, it belongs to the Asparagus family, and is more related to plants such as agaves, yuccas and of course, the asparagus. Its stems, which resemble bamboo canes, are often braided, trained and tied together to form attractive shapes which include towers, trellises, spirals and pineapples. It may also be decorated with red ribbons and lucky ornaments, especially during Chinese New Year. The Lucky Bamboo makes an ideal houseplant, being a low maintenance plant which requires little care and tolerates low light conditions well.
