This is Singapore's national flower! Formerly called the Vanda Miss Joaquim, this flower has been reclassified from the genus Vanda to Papilionanthe, so it is now known as Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim. It is named after Miss Agnes Joaquim (1854–1899), who is credited with creating the hybrid by H.N. Ridley, former Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It is also the only hybrid to be selected as a national flower.
