Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a large tree, sometimes exceeding 3 m girth.
Foliage Leaves are obovate shaped (5 – 11 cm long and 2.5 - 6 cm wide) and densely covered in characteristic golden-brown scales on the underside. Leaves have up to 16 pairs of secondary veins and ladder-like tertiary veins. Leaf base is obtuse and acumen is short (up to 6 mm long). Petiole is 1.5 - 2 cm long while stipule is 0.8 cm long, linear and obtuse.
Flowers Inflorescence occurs on the axillary or terminal ends, and hang pendulously (up to 14 cm long). Flower is cream-white with fringed petals and contains about 25 stamens. Stylopodium is cylindrical and very hairy. Style is short and tapering from a stout base to a slender tip.  
Fruit Fruit have calyx tube (about 13mm across), crowned with a prominent stylopodium. Fruit has 2 wing like calyx lobe (up to about 12 cm long) and 3 smaller wings (up to 1.5 cm long). Nut is almost round, about 3 mm long.
Habitat It is found in mixed peat swamp forest, health forest up to 1200m altitude.
