Similar This species is often confused with Begonia thiemi due to the similiarities in leaf form. When not in flower these 2 species can be separated based on the rhizome - Begonia thiemi has rhizomes that are repent, whereas Begonia carolineifolia has ascending or erect rhizomes.  The flowers of Begonia thiemi  also has more stamens (21-27 (-26)) compared to B. carolineifolia which has only 13-19 stamens. The anthers and staminate sepals  are also larger in B thiemi
