Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Herb to 3m tall
Foliage Leaves light - mid green; leaf blades to 1m in length.
Flowers Inflorescence with 6-8 bracts, bright red, distal lip with thin green line; pale greenish yellow towards middle and proximal edge of the lip. Flowers green.
Etymology This cultivar was named in honour of the co-founder of the Andromeda Gardens in Barbados, Iris Bannochie.  Originally registered as Heliconia stricta  'Iris Bannochie' , the cultivar name was amended to  Heliconia stricta  'Iris' in accordance to the international naming convention for cultivated plants.
