Seagrass monitoring by TeamSeaGrass

TeamSeaGrass is a volunteer-led initiative to monitor and protect seagrasses along Singapore’s coasts.

Why this matters

Seagrasses are critical marine ecosystems. They support a variety of marine life, from tiny organisms to large animals like the dugong. Changes in seagrass health and distribution can greatly impact marine biodiversity.

Seagrass health is a key indicator of the overall health of marine habitats. Monitoring it allows us to detect:

  • Positive effects such as from restoration efforts and improved management.
  • Negative changes such as pollution, coastal works or early signs of climate change.

About TeamSeaGrass

Since 2007, TeamSeaGrass volunteers regularly monitor Singapore’s seagrass meadows at:

  • Chek Jawa
  • Pulau Semakau
  • Cyrene Reef

These volunteers collect valuable data on seagrass health and distribution. This information helps us understand the impact of restoration efforts, pollution and other factors affecting our shores.

TeamSeaGrass is a collaboration between the National Biodiversity Centre of NParks and Seagrass-Watch, the largest scientific, non-destructive seagrass assessment and monitoring programme in the world.
