School assembly talks

Students can learn facts about our City in Nature and native biodiversity in our assembly talks conducted within the school compound.

Conducting the talks

These assembly talks are usually 1 hour and cover topics such as:

  • Our City in Nature journey
  • Conservation of our green spaces
  • Our native biodiversity
  • Community and companion animals

The minimum audience size required is 100 for primary school levels and above.

Speakers require a minimum of 40 minutes to adequately cover their respective topics.

Shorter durations of talks or smaller audience sizes can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

1. City in Nature talk

Suitable for: Primary school, secondary school, tertiary

Today, we live in an increasingly liveable, sustainable, and climate-resilient Singapore. As part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, we will continue to build upon our greening efforts and transform Singapore into a City in Nature.

Through this talk, students will learn:

  • The strategies in place to restore nature in Singapore.
  • How to take advantage of nature-based solutions.
  • Ways to ensure the welfare of animals.
  • The existing science and technology put in place which support our work.

2. AVS Show & Tell at Schools

Suitable for: Preschool (Nursery 1 and above), primary school

The Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) staff will pay a visit to schools with rescued pets that are currently in AVS’ care.

Through this talk, students will learn:

  • What it takes to be a good pet owner.
  • Why only certain types of animals should be kept as pets.
  • How to clean, feed and groom various pet animals.
  • The importance of caring for a pet collectively as a household.

3. Fascinating creatures of Singapore Botanic Gardens 

Suitable for: Preschool (K1 and K2)

Students will have the opportunity to roleplay as different animals and plants found within the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Through this talk, students will learn:

  • The relationships between living things and the environment.
  • The fascinating biodiversity of our local flora and fauna, and the habitats in which they live.

4. Marvellous trees 

Suitable for: Preschool (K1 and K2)

This interactive talk features activities with light movements to highlight key differences among different types of trees, and teach the importance of trees to animals and humans.

5. Wildlife in our neighbourhood

Suitable for: Preschool (K1 and K2), primary school, secondary school, tertiary

This talk will provide information on how to interact with wildlife and nature responsibly, with a focus on commonly encountered wildlife species such as long-tailed macaques, wild boars, civets, snakes etc.

6. Urban birds in your neighbourhood

Suitable for: Preschool (K1 and K2), primary school, secondary school

This talk will provide information on how to interact with wildlife and nature responsibly, with a focus on urban birds that can be found in your neighbourhood such as pigeons, mynas and crows.

Through this talk, students will learn:

  • The disamenities that urban birds can bring about.
  • How to behave appropriately when it comes to urban birds.

7. Singapore Botanic Gardens: Our Heritage

Suitable for: Primary school 

Students will learn about conservation efforts and understand the significant role Singapore Botanic Gardens plays in Singapore and the region.

They will also appreciate the reasons that led to the gardens’ inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and more.

8. Friends of the Forest 

Suitable for: Primary school

Discover the flora and fauna that live in our local rainforests, and the important role they play in regulating our climate and our efforts in conserving our biodiversity.

Through this talk, students will learn how to classify rainforests into 2 types – primary and secondary, as well as its 4 structural layers and more.

9. Biosurveillance efforts by NParks

Suitable for: Secondary school (upper secondary), tertiary

  • How science and technology can be applied in real-world situations with key functions.
  • How everyone can play a part in ensuring our biosecurity and be introduced to career fields related to biosurveillance.
