The genus Ficus, commonly known as figs, consists of a large number of species of trees and shrubs that can be found throughout tropical regions. Ficus species are unique because of their distinctive fig ‘fruits’. The ‘fruits’ are actually modified inflorescence structures that bear flowers on their inner surface. Each Ficus species is typically pollinated by a specific species of fig wasp, which enter the fig inflorescence through a tiny opening called an ostiole at the tip of each inflorescence.
