Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a shrub (rarely tree) that usually grows to 1 - 3 m tall (can be up to 6 m).
Foliage The leaves are petiolate, lanceolate, leaf blade membranaceous (thin and almost transparent) to chartaceous (paper-like) with acute base and smooth, soft hairs along the major veins.
Flowers Staminate inflorescence (inflorescence with male flowers) are 3 - 13 cm long and slender with 0.5 - 1 mm long stamens. Pistillate inflorescence (inflorescence with female flowers) are about 2 cm long,
Habitat In its native habitat, it is found growing in riverine rainforests along rivers, on swampy or seasonally flooded ground, among the boulders or in the river bed. Sometimes the plant is partly submergedin river, on sandstones, at 0 - 700 m altitude. <1>
