Amorphophallus asterostigmatus Bogner & Hett.

Amorphophallus asterostigmatus , or Voodoo Lily produces an umbrella-shaped leaf, its petiole is greyish with dark chocolate spots. Its spadix inflorescence has a cream-coloured spathe held on a greenish to greyish purple flower stalk, sparsely decorated in dark brown spots. Like all Amorphophallus species, once the flower dies back, a single leaf will then be produced. Voodoo lily is an ornamental aroid that is easy to grow under deep and well-drained media.

Description and Ethnobotany

Foliage It produces a single compound leaf with elliptic leaflets. They are dark green in colour and pale green on the underside. The overall spread of the leaf measures between 50 – 100 cm wide. The petiole is smooth, greyish red to green. It is decorated in elliptic to circular dark chocolate brown spots.
Flowers Its flowers are borne on a single spadix inflorescence, held on a flower stalk 35 – 70 cm tall. The peduncle (flower stalk) is greenish to greyish mauve (pale purple), sparsely decorated in dark brown spots. The spathe is ovate-shaped, cream to pale green with a greenish margin. The base of the spathe is greenish with occasional flush of purple. The spathe is about the same height as the spadix, 15 – 21 by 7 – 13cm.
Others - Plant Morphology Its tuber has a depressed-globose shape, measures between 3 – 5 by 5 – 9 cm. A few to several short, elongated or subglobose offsets are attached to the main tuber.
Habitat Grown on slopes with limestone boulders
Etymology The specific epithet, asterostigmatus refers to its star-shaped stigma.
