Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form A tree of about 15 m high and 12 cm in diameter, has spiny trunk and branches.
Trunk Grey-brown bark.
Foliage Green; simple or compound, 1-3 foliate, leaflets opposite; margin smooth; pinnate; petiole long, winged, attached to leaf base; stipule absent.
Flowers Inflorescence present; axillary; flowers bisexual, stalk about 10 cm long, round, disk with stamens outside disk, perianth with distinctive petals and sepals; 5 partially joined sepals, 5 deciduous petals; 10 stamens with free filaments; ovary superior with 5 joined carpels and 5 solitary styles; 1 lobed, head-shaped stigma. 
Fruit Berry, fleshy, cylindrical pulp vesicles, thick leathery rind, 22-26 ovules in each of 5 locules, numerous seeds
Habitat This tree grows on slopes and ridge tops as well as stream banks, mostly in primary and secondary forests.
