Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form A showy, scrambling, herbaceous shrub or groundcover.
Foliage Leaves are simple, elliptical to ovate in shape, sessile or sub-sessile, variegated of light and dark green.
Stems Herbaceous and slender, and covered with fine hairs.
Flowers Inflorescence (in clusters), corymbose type, red flowers of trumpet shaped with flaring lobes, measuring about 2.5 to 3 cm, terminally located.
Etymology The genus Ruellia is honoured after the French physician and botanist Jean Ruelle (1474 ca. - 1537), of Soissons, author of a treatise titled “De Natura stirpium libri tres”, in which he reported all the botanical knowledge of the time. The species epithet rosea means rose-coloured in reference to its flowers.
