Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Upright evergreen tree which grow up to 54 m high. 
Trunk Trunk is about 1 m dbh (diameter at breast height). Bark is dark brown to gray-brown with brownish inner bark and white sapwood. Bark often peels in large irregular flakes and produces scented reddish resin. 
Foliage Leaves are ovate to elliptic with dark green on the upper surface and paler green on the lower surface. Matured leaves are smooth and leathery without primary vein. About 6 – 14 long and 2 – 5 cm wide, leaves are arranged in decussate form where a pair of opposite leaves are alternating at right angle. Leaves margin is entire with stomata on both leaves surfaces. 
Fruit Receptacle is fleshy and turned from green to dark purple or black when matured. Seed, about 2 cm wide, is spherical with a small beak. 
Reproductive Parts - non-flowering plant Males and females pollen cones are found on separate trees. Female cones are solitary while male cones occur in clusters of 3 to 5.  
Habitat Found in primary rainforest from 5 m to 2100 m above sea level. 
Ethnobotanical Uses Timber & Products: Wood is often used as timber.
