Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Herbaceous vine with a creeping growth form.
Foliage Leaves are large and bean-shaped.
Flowers Yellow flowers are composed of 5 wrinkled, oval to egg-shaped petals.
Fruit Fruits are round with a netted texture. Fruits ripen with a few days of harvest, turning from greyish green to greenish yellow. The flesh is orange, juicy and sweet.
Taxonomy This cultivar was first created in 1961 by crossing 2 cultivars known as Spicy Cantaloupe and Earl's Favorite.

Food (Fruit or Vegetable): This cultivar is grown in the town of Yubari in Hokkaido, Japan. The name 'Yubari King' is trademarked, so that only melons grown in Yubari are allowed to be labelled as Yubari King melons. The fruit is among the most expensive in the world, fetching a usual price of 60-120 SGD per melon and upwards of 30,000 SGD for the best fruits harvested at the beginning of the season.
