Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a tree up to 40 m tall, without buttresses.
Foliage Its opposite, stalked leaves are once- or twice-pinnate. Its stalked leaflets have leathery leaf blades that are upturned, oval to drop-shaped, and 7–15 by 2.5–6 cm. A cluster of tiny, dot-like, brown glands are found on either side of the base and the tips.
Flowers Its mostly cream-white flowers are mildly fragrant with crisped edges. They are pinkish-lilac outside, with five orange patches, and fine, orange lines inside. They are also found in clusters at the end of leafy twigs.
Fruit Its fruits are straight or twisted, 16–50 by 0.5–1 cm, and hanging in clusters at the end of branches. They split when ripe to release many, tiny, narrow, winged seeds that are up to 2.5 by 0.5 cm. Its seeds are wind-dispersed.
Habitat It grows in primary and secondary forests, from the lowlands up to 800 m altitude. It occurs locally in Nee Soon Swamp Forest.
Associated Fauna Its flowers are insect-pollinated.
Etymology Latin Radermachera, commemorating J. C. M. Radermache (1741–1783), a patron of science in the Netherlands Indies.
Ethnobotanical Uses Others: The wood is used to make match-boxes and match-sticks.
