Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Shrub 1.5 to 2 m tall
Foliage Leaves leathery, elliptic - ovate,  20-30cm long by 5-10cm wide, dark green above; veins light green, sunken. Undersurface of leaves light green, veins raised.  Young leaves dark red- reddish brown. 
Flowers Inflorescence to 30-40cm in length, rachis dull olive green - dull pale green with faint reddish brown spots, sometimes completely pinkish red- rose red towards to apical part of the inflorescence. Side branches of inflorescence of same color as main rachis, or white tinged with pink, often with rose colored markings at internodes.  Flowers large, to 5cm across. Petals 5, white, occasionally tinged with pink, with a rose colored ring forming an 'eye' at the centre of the flower. Short stamens 5, anthers recurved,, bluish violet; longer stamens 5, white tinged with pink.   Receptacle pale pink, or white tinged with rose-pink.
