Description and Ethnobotany
Growth Form | Succulent with a shrubby growth form up to 0.8 m tall. |
---|---|
Foliage | Erect, fleshy leaves are tubular with a rolled or suction cap-like tip. Adjacent pairs of leaves are arranged perpendicular to one another, forming 4 files (also known as decussate leaf arrangement). |
Stems | Thick, woody stem is regularly divided into many segments. The tan-coloured stem is mostly smooth with a few shallow cracks. |
Flowers | White to pinkish white, small flowers are arranged in dense, round clusters. |
Cultivation | In Singapore, this cultivar needs air conditioning to survive. This cultivar needs bright light to produce deep green foliage, but it should be protected from intense exposure to full sun. It is generally pest free, but sometimes attacked by mealy bugs. Water the soil thoroughly, and then allow the surface to dry completely before re-watering. Overwatering is a common mistake that prevents the plant from flourishing. Feed sparingly with a half-strength, low nitrogen fertilizer, like those designed for tomatoes. It also needs good air circulation. |
