Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Large shrub with fan-shaped leaves, typically growing up to 1-2m tall. In the wild, it can form a small tree up to 5m tall.
Foliage Greyish green, fleshy leaves (30 cm long, 4 cm wide) are linear and arranged in 2 files, forming a fan-like shape. Leaf margin is mostly smooth with a few small teeth near the tip.
Flowers Bright red, fleshy flowers are tubular (5 cm long). Up to 30 flowers are arranged in a raceme with each fan-shaped set of leaves producing only 1 raceme.
Cultivation This species requires a cool climate for optimal growth.
