Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Succulent tree with a rounded crown, growing up to 15 m tall.
Crown Dichotomous branching (branches divided into 2 parts) forms a round, spreading crown.
Trunk The trunk has smooth, grey bark, is forked and grows up to 0.9 m wide. 
Foliage Recurved leaves (leaves that curl backwards) are arranged in a dense rosette. Narrow, linear leaves have a toothed leaf margin. 
Flowers Tubular flowers are rose pink with green tips. They are arranged in racemes (spike-like inflorescence with flowers attached by a distinct stalk). In Africa, flowers are pollinated by sunbirds.
Fruit Dry, dehiscent fruits are known as capsules. The seeds are dispersed by the wind.
Habitat Occurs in subtropical coastal forest, valleys and deep ravines.
Etymology The specific epithet barberae was named after Mary Elizabeth Barber, the plant collector who first discovered the species.
