Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Palm with a round crown of fan-shaped fronds. It grows up to 5 m tall.
Trunk Trunk is covered by triangular leaf bases and interwoven leaf fibers that look like burlap.
Foliage Fan-shaped, stiff fronds have a dark green, smooth upper surface and a grayish, hairy lower surface. The palmately lobed frond is deeply divided into 5 cm-wide leaflets.
Flowers Cream-coloured flowers are borne on a 0.9 m-long inflorescence.
Fruit Red, round fruits turn dark red or purple-black at maturity (1.3 cm wide).
Habitat This species occurs in grasslands, open woods and coastal areas.
