Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is an upright shrub, growing up to 1 m tall.
Foliage Its stalked, opposite to subopposite, compound leaves are 5-7 cm long, with 3-7 leaflets. Each leaflet is lanceolate, 1.5-3 cm by 0.3-0.7 cm.
Flowers Its tiny flowers are arranged in a composite head, with two different type of flowers. The inner flowers (disc florets) have reduced corollas, 6-7 mm. The outer flowers (ray florets) have larger, oblong corolla, bright yellow, 9-15 mm.
Fruit Its tiny fruits are 5-6 mm long.
Habitat It grows in moist areas, in grasslands, scrublands, woodlands, cliffs and streamsides.
Associated Fauna Its flowers are insect-pollinated.
Cultivation It can be propagated by seed.
Etymology Latin Tagetes, after Tages, Etruscan god of the underworld and grandson of Jupiter. Latin lemmonii, after Sarah Lemmon, a botanist who described many north American flora.
