Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Shorea macrantha is a tree (up to 40 m tall and 3 m girth) with drooping branchlets and a compact crown. 
Trunk Young Shorea macrantha has bark studded with large diffuse lenticels and become irregularly fissured when matured. It provide colourless sticky resin shortly after cutting. 
Foliage Leaves are leathery and elliptic or ovate-oblong (usually 13 cm long and 7 cm wide but can be variable) with slightly unequal leaf base. Leaves are mostly smooth on the upper surface and tomentose beneath, with 15 secondary veins. Petiole is stout (5 mm long) and twigs are tomentose too.  Stipules are present and persistent. 
Flowers Flowers are large with narrow white petals about 2 cm long. 
Fruit Fruits are large and wingless. Nut is about 5 cm long and calyx lobes are about 2 cm high.  
Habitat Peat swamp and near river. 
Ethnobotanical Uses Others: Seeds contain edible nut oil that is eaten in western Sarawak as Engkabang bungkus. The oil can also be used in making soap, candles, polishes and cosmetics.
