Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a palm up to 2 m tall.
Foliage Its spirally arranged, stalked pinnate leaves are 0.9 m long, and its leaflets have blades that are lance-shaped, dark green above, white below, and 45 by 2.5 cm.
Flowers Its flowering shoot is 7–15 cm long and densely covered with spines that are about 2.5 cm long. Its female flower is 0.6 cm long.
Fruit Its fruit is drop-shaped, beaked, shiny black, and about 2.5 cm long.
Habitat It grows in forests.
Associated Fauna Its flowers are insect-pollinated.
Etymology Greek Calamus, reed. Specific epithet lobbianus, commemorating the brothers William Lobb (1809–1863) and Thomas Lobb (1820–1894)
