Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a hairy, slender climber.
Foliage Its opposite, stalked leaves have leathery leaf blades that are egg-shaped or heart-shaped, 4–6 by 2–3 cm, and with rounded bases.
Flowers Its white flowers are found in dense clusters that are about 2 cm across.
Fruit Its white fruits are oblong, about 6.4 mm long, and contain 3-ridged seeds in fleshy fruit pulp.
Habitat It grows on trees along forest edges. It occurs locally in the Upper Peirce Reservoir area, along Seletar Track, Lorong Gangsa, Chestnut Avenue Cycling Track, Rifle Range Road, and Pulau Tekong.
Associated Fauna Its flowers are insect-pollinated.
Cultivation It can be propagated by seed and stem cuttings.
Etymology Latin psychotria, wild coffee, from the Greek word, psychotrophon, applied to Jamaican plants or betony because the plants are found in cold places; Latin ovoidea, referring to the shape of the leaf blades
