Description and Ethnobotany
Growth Form | Perennial herb or shrub up to 2-3 m tall with an erect growth form. |
---|---|
Foliage | Green, hairy leaves are ovate to narrowly oblong with serrate or serrulate leaf margin (edged with small to medium-sized teeth). The upper leaf surface is covered with short, stiff hairs tightly pressed together (strigose), and the lower surface is downy (puberulent). Leaves are arranged in pairs near the base of the plant, progressively becoming slightly offset from one another (subopposite) or alternately arranged towards the top of the plant. |
Flowers | Compound flower, known as a head, is composed of 7-13 white florets (reduced flowers). Tubular florets have 5 small, triangular lobes that are hairless or glandular. The heads are arranged in a branched structure known as a corymbose panicle. |
Fruit | Dry, indehiscent fruit, known as an achene, is 1-seeded, elongated and 5-ribbed (2 mm long). The apex is slightly wider than the base and bears a cluster of bristles (known as a pappus) which are similar in length to the tubular florets. |
