Description and Ethnobotany

Others - Plant Morphology Growth Form: Small evergreen tree. Habitat: Occurs in tropical rainforests. Trunk: Flowers are borne along the trunk in small clusters. Foliage: Glossy, soft, dark green leaves are elliptic with entire leaf margin (30 cm long). Leaves are deeply veined, creating an uneven leaf texture. Young foliage is pink to bright red. Flowers: Small, pom-pom shaped flowers occur on the branches and along the trunk. The calyx (outermost layer of the flower) is red and the long, numerous stamens are white. Fruits: Bright red, fleshy fruits are apple- to pear-shaped (4 - 8 cm long, 3 - 7 cm wide). Landscaping: This species has attractive young foliage which is pink to bright red and produces an abundance of bright red fruits. It would be ideal as a specimen plant for parks. For a unique look, consider planting a young sapling in a large container. It will produce bright red young foliage for a few years before it needs to be transplanted in the ground. Cultivation: This species grows best in fertile, well-draining soil that is kept moist. It should be sheltered from strong winds. Propagation: Propagate by seed. Etymology: The genus name "Syzygium" is derived from the Greek word "suzugos" which means joined. Syzygium used to be the name of a Jamaican plant species with paired leaves and branches. The species epithet "erythrocalyx" is derived from the Greek word for red ("eruthros") and refers to the red calyx.
