Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form A large herbaceous perennial. It has a clumping growth form and spreads sideways via its suckers. 
Foliage The leaves are simple and hastate to sagittate in shape. It has a dark green upper leaf surface while its lower leaf surface is reddish-brown with red leaf veins. The leaf petioles are long, brown and mottled with white and pink. The surface of the leaf petioles are covered with sharp spines, arranged in arcs along the petiole. 
Flowers The flowers are borne on an inflorescence called a spadix. 
Habitat It is found in shallow, still water. 
Cultivation It is ideally grown under light shade, emersed in water. It requires consistently moist soil which should be be allowed to dry out in between waterings.
