Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a tree up to 40 m tall. Its greyish brown bark is shallowly fissured. It has buttress roots up to 1 m tall.
Foliage Its spirally arranged, stalked leave have papery to leathery leaf blades that are narrowly drop-shaped, 8–15 by 3–5 cm, and hairless and glossy above.
Flowers Its male flowering shoots are 10–20 cm long, whereas the female or bisexual flowering shoots are 10–15 cm long. Its male flowers grow in clusters of 3, while the female flowers are solitary and rarely grow in clusters of 2–3.
Fruit Its depressed ovoid fruits are chocolate-brown, hairless, glossy, and 2–2.5 cm long. Its stalkless cupules are saucer- or cup-shaped, and 0.5–1 cm long.
Habitat It grows in forests up to 1,600 m altitude. It occurs locally in Nee Soon Swamp Forest and the Upper Seletar Reservoir and Upper Pierce Reservoir areas.
Associated Fauna Its flowers are insect pollinated.
Cultivation It can be propagated by seed.
Etymology Greek lithos, stone; Greek karpos, fruit, referring to the hard acorn; Latin lucida, shining or bright, referring to the acorn and the upper leaf surface
