Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a tree up to 3–30 m tall, sometimes with buttress and stilt roots.
Foliage Its spirally arranged, stalked leaves have leathery leaf blades that are oval, rarely oblong, with a pointed tip, green above, lighter green below, covered with 0.1 mm long hair below, 6–15 by 3–5.5 cm, and have 7–11 pairs of lateral veins that are raised below.
Flowers Gymnacranthera farquhariana var. farquhariana  is dioecious, producing male and female flowers on different plants. Its flower clusters are covered with 0.2 mm long hair. Its male flowers develop in a 2.5–12 by 8 cm, many-flowered cluster, while its female flowers develop in a 4 by 2 cm, few-flowered cluster. Its flowers are yellow and covered with rusty hair 0.1 mm long.
Fruit Its stalked fruit is slightly round, yellow to orange when ripe, with a 1 mm thick fruit wall, not covered with hair to not noticeably hairy, develops in clusters of 1–6, and is very spicy. Its seeds have arils and are not variegated.
Associated Fauna Its flowers are insect-pollinated.
Cultivation It can be propagated by seed.
Etymology Greek gymnacranthera, apical-exposed stamen; farquhariana, commemorating General William Farquhar (1770–1839), a major in the British army and the first resident of Singapore
