Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a tree, 6-21 m tall, and without buttresses.
Foliage Its alternate, stalked leaves have think leathery leaf blades that are elliptic to obovate, 12-39 cm long and 4-13.6 cm wide.
Flowers Its male and female flowers are borne on separate trees (dioecious). The small male flowers are 2-2.6 mm wide and densely hairy, borne on an inflorescence. The female flowers are slightly larger, 4-10 mm wide and densely hairy, pale yellow to creamy yellow in colour, borne on an inflorescence.
Fruit Its fruits obovoid or lantern-shaped berries, with raised longitudinal ridges from the top to the tip, 3-5.2 cm long, ripening red to pink. The seeds are covered by a sweet-sour aril that is edible.
Habitat It grows in lowland primary and secondary forests, and also in riverine forests.
Cultivation It can be propagated by seed.
