Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is an evergreen climber or lianas with branches covered with lenticels.
Foliage Leaves are elliptic shaped (9 – 29 cm long and 4.5 – 14.2 cm wide), opposite arrangement and with long glands present in the axils. Apex is acuminate, base is obtuse to cuneate and petiole is 1 – 2.5 cm long. Leaves are hairy when young and become hairless as it mature.
Flowers Inflorescence is 11 – 19.5 cm long, consisting of 3 – 15 flowers and leafy sepals (2.4 – 4 cm long and 1.1 – 2.3 cm wide). Flower is tubular (4.2 – 6 cm long) with 5 cream white petals and stamens (1.5 – 3.5 cm long) in the center of the flower. Ovary is 0.14 – 0.25 cm long and densely hairy.
Fruit Fruit is elliptical (18 cm long and 5 cm wide) and seeds are 1.1 – 2 cm long and 0.4 – 0.5 cm wide with a tuft of long hairs (3 – 8 cm long) at one end of the seeds for dispersal.
Habitat It is found in evergreen and montane forests, riverbanks at altitude 1000-1500 m.
Etymology The genus Beaumontia is named after Lady Diana Beaumont of Bretton Hall, Yorkshire.
Ethnobotanical Uses Others: The laxtex is said to be used as an arrow poison.
