Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a small, evergreen tree with a dense, rounded crown and dark to light grey, fissured bark.
Foliage Leaves are green, large, ovate shaped. They are thick, deeply veined and have a rough, uneven leaf texture.
Flowers Flowers are bright orange to orange-red, salverform. Corolla is 6-lobed with wrinkled textured petals. Flowers occur in small clusters located at the branch tips.
Fruit Fruit is fleshy and ovoid, containing 1 - 4 seeds within. Fruit turns from green to white at maturity.
Cultivation This free-flowering cultivar has an attractive crown shape which regularly becomes dotted with bright orange flowers. It is ideal as a roadside tree or shade tree for parks. This cultivar has a moderate growth rate and has a high tolerance for salt, drought and nutrient poor soils. However, it is sensitive to soil compaction. For optimal growth, it should be planted in fertile, well-drained soil and fed once or twice a year. Saplings should be pruned at the branch tips to encourage a bushy growth form. They begin to bloom at about 3 years of age. This cultivar is susceptible to beetles, scale insects, mites and rust.
