Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Eugenia stipitata is a shrub or a small tree.
Foliage Its hairy leaves are ovate to broadly elliptic, arranged in opposite pairs.
Flowers Its flowers are born in leaf axils, with white petals and numerous stamens.
Fruit Round fruits are yellowish to golden at maturity (8-12 cm wide). They weigh about 200-500 g per fruit and have an acidic flavour.
Cultivation This species is adapted to growing on acidic, low nutrient soils with high Aluminum content. It prefers well-drained soils.
Etymology The genus name Eugenia is named after Prince Eugenia of Savoy, a general of the Holy Roman Empire in 18th century.
Ethnobotanical Uses Edible Plant Parts : Edible Fruits
Food (Fruit or Vegetable): The acidic fruits are typically not eaten fresh, but are used to make juice, ice cream, marmalade and cream. The skin can be easily peeled off when the fruit is fully ripe.
