Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Erect herb up to 1.5 m tall.
Foliage Large, smooth, glossy leaves are oval-shaped and borne on long petioles (leaf stalk).
Stems This plant has underground, horizontal stems known as rhizomes. 
Flowers The inflorescence resembles a single, large, star-shaped flower (7.5 cm wide). It is composed of whitish to dark red, lance-shaped bracts which resemble petals and small white flowers which occur below the bracts.
