Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It can be pruned into a shrub or otherwise becomes a climber. 
Foliage Green, glossy leaves are elliptic.
Stems The stem bears thorns at the base of the leaves.
Flowers Light purple, triangular bracts form showy "blossoms". The true flower is small, white and tubular.
Cultivation It produces the most bracts when slightly potbound, so avoid re-potting unless necessary and use only a slightly larger pot size. The root system is fragile and should not be pruned or re-potted in the same size container. It grows best in moist, but well-drained soil with pH of 6 to 6.5.
