| Description | The male has black ear coverts, upperparts, legs and feet, with a long dagger-like yellow bill with dark tip. It lacks a head crest, having a white throat and breast, with broad black streaks and plain buff patch on sides of neck and upper breast, with grey lower underparts. During flight, broad wings are dark. The female resembles the male but with darker brown on some parts of plumage and more reddish-brown streaks. The juvenile is similar to the female but crown and upperside feathers have thin rufous fringes and a buff-brown breast. |

| Distribution | Birds breeds in South China and Southeast Asia migration south in the same region, while resident populations are also found in South Asia and Australia. An uncommon non-breeding visitor and passage migrant that can be seen at the wetland between Nov and Jul. Numbers appear to peak from around Nov to Jan. |
