Ecology, Habitat & Location

Ecological Notes This species occurs in back mangroves. Like other fiddler crabs (Uca spp.), males use the enlarged pincer for courtship and territorial displays. The smaller claw is used for feeding on detritus.

Distribution Found in the Indian Ocean and in South-east Asia.

Trends & Threats Loss or deterioration of back-mangrove habitats.
Scientific Interest & Potential Value This species was first described from Singapore. In addition, it is representative of a unique assemblage of animals that live almost exclusively in the back mangrove zone (e.g.. Mud lobster Thalassina).
Conservation Notes The conservation of entire mangroves including all the topographical/ecological zones, and the prevention of dumping in back mangroves, which are often regarded as “wasteland”.
