Description

Description Body slender, reddish; a large, roundish black blotch in mid-body in front of dorsal fin, and a black spot each on the caudal base and above the anal fin. Dorsal and anal fins with blackish tips.

Ecological Notes This gregarious tiny fish is found in quiet forest streams with slow-flowing acidic water.

Distribution In Singapore, present in very few locations, and in small numbers in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Distributed in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.

Conservation Notes Protection of the few streams frequented by this species from human encroachment (development, pollution and illegal fish collectors) appears to be the only effective way of ensuring its survival in Singapore. Efforts should be made to ensure that the aquarium trade is supplied with captive bred stocks.
