This charming artefact was recovered when the Istana underwent renovation in the 1990s. It had the likeness of a clean-shaven Malay man and was referred to as Mandor (“Supervisor” in Malay). However, the conservators who restored the statue uncovered its original coat of paint depicting it as an Indian man with moustache and beard! It is believed that the convict labourers who built the Istana made this statue. Today, this statue sits at the top of the grand staircase facing the entrance of the Istana - quietly standing watch in gentle welcome of all guests to the Istana.

The voice-over roles were dubbed by President Halimah Yacob and children from Chua Chu Kang Primary School, Club Rainbow (Singapore) and New Life Stories.

The practice no longer stands, but the 88-year old gates still do. The gates are now known as the Centre Gate and makes the division between the Istana’s upper and lower grounds.
Today, the main entrance to the Istana is the Main Gate along Orchard Road.

The items are available to visitors at the Istana Open House and sales proceeds are donated to the President’s Challenge. Some are also presented as gifts to Istana guests, helping to highlight another aspect of the Singapore story.

Sri Temasek
Sri Temasek is a typical 19th century bungalow. Its unique intricate timber arcade shows a mixture of Eastern and Western decorative motifs. Of particular interest is the Moon Gate on the second level. Typically found in Chinese architecture, it is used as a screen to separate the common verandahs and the private space.
The white Moon Gate is made of chengal, teak and meranti. There are no known records of the Moon Gate, except that it was designed and built by William Swaffield, a pre-war Comptroller of Government House as well as a professional furniture designer.

The Istana
The Istana building sits on top of a hill, some 40 metres above the ground. Before the skyscrapers of the Central Business District were built, it was possible to see the Indonesian Islands to the South and the hills of Johor to the North on a clear day.
The Istana is similar to many 18th century neo-Palladian style buildings designed by the British. With a tropical layout like a Malay house, surrounded by verandahs, louvred windows and panelled doors, cross ventilation allows for a cool and airy interior.
The central three-storey 'one-stage' tower is crowned with a slated mansard roof. It has dormer windows and is embellished with Corinthian pilaster and beautiful cornices. The two-storey side wings are ornamented with Ionic colonnades at the second floor and Doric colonnades at the first storey. A pediment and portico terminates the colonnades at both ends.
The Istana
The Istana building sits on top of a hill, some 40 metres above the ground. Before the skyscrapers of the Central Business District were built, it was possible to see the Indonesian Islands to the South and the hills of Johor to the North on a clear day.

The Istana Heritage Gallery was launched on 7 October 2016 and is located at the Istana Park along Orchard Road, opposite the Istana.
The Gallery captures the history of Istana's transition from the Colonial Governor's House to its present role as the Official Residence of the President.
The Gallery also features a range of heritage displays including state artefacts, artworks and collection of gifts presented by foreign dignitaries to Singapore's Presidents and Prime Ministers.

i’mable Collective by SG Enable Gift Display
Gifts are given to dignitaries and guests during their visits to the Istana or when the President travels overseas for official purposes. The President’s Office has commissioned i’mable Collective by SG Enable to produce a collection of gifts which includes the half leather bound journal, leather valet tray, the Utama Collection scarf in champagne and porcelain plaque (with gold rim).
Through this, the President’s Office hopes to reinforce its support towards empowering Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) by providing an additional platform to recognise their abilities and to showcase their creative talents.
i’mable Collective aims to showcase and market the creative works of PwDs. Through the Collective, they will be given opportunities to hone their skills and sell their crafts.
